Day 13: In Plain Sight
We are all on an exodus of sorts. Maybe we’re not hoofing it several hundred miles on foot to a better address. We are, however, being led out of a land of selfishness into God’s Promised Land. The Israelites did something significant to mark the night before their departure¾they shared the Passover meal. Before you can leave the land of Egypt - the place of spiritual bondage - you must have the blood applied to the doorposts of your heart. As Jewish people yearly celebrate Passover, they eat matzo bread, not realizing that they hold a powerful apologetic for the gospel in their hands when they do so.
Search for a picture of matzo if you’ve never tasted it. What characteristics does it have?
1. Striped—as Christ’s back was by the Roman whip.
2. Pierced. Zechariah 12:10 “…they will look upon me whom they have pierced…” Psalm 22:16 “…a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and feet.” Isaiah 53:5 “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”
3. Unleavened. The Israelites had no time to allow the dough to rise before they fled Egypt. By Christ’s day, yeast had come to someone puffed up by pride. 1 Corinthians 5:6 “Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast… For Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed.”
Jesus is not only the bloody doorposts and the matzo…. He is that perfect, spotless sacrifice to cover sin. Ask Him to reveal Himself to His chosen people as the Lamb of God slain for them.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I recognize that apart from your death on the cross, I would be forever stuck in my sins without hope. Thank you for forgiving me and imparting your life in place of the death I deserve. Help me to walk in your ways today.
