Day 16: Made to be Molded

Junior High may be God’s humbling for young people. There is not a time in life that seems to be more awkward, uncomfortable, or quite literally ugly. I can think of all the phases that I went through during that time. My friends started playing with airsoft guns, so I played with airsoft guns. My friends stared watching reality TV so I watched reality TV. My friends dressed in FUBU, so I dressed in FUBU. I could use these examples all day, just go check out my Myspace account; it’s filled with regret.

Looking back, I wish I could have recognized what was happening then. I wish I knew how malleable I was. Truth is though, it’s not just Junior Highers who are constantly being changed to what’s around them. It is how we are wired as humans. Humans are made to be formed into whatever they are around. If we stopped long enough to look, we would see that we are each being formed into something.

Spiritual Formation is the process of shaping the innermost dimension of a person (the heart) into a definitive form or character. Everything we do is forming our hearts. Spiritual formation is not something that we get to choose to do. It is always happening. Our hearts are being formed because they are made to be molded. Spiritual formation is happening right now, but we must be aware of what we are being formed into.

You were made to be molded. You were made to be molded into the image of God. Christian Spiritual Formation is the redemptive, grace-empowered process where people partner with the Holy Spirit to (trans)form the heart (a person’s innermost dimension) to the definitive form or character of Jesus, the true human. You were made to be molded, so let’s get to work.

Read: Isaiah 64:8

Prayer:
God, mold me into the person you truly meant for me to be. Make me look more like you. Amen.
