Day 26: The Gospel Breaks Our Nets

 Read Matthew 4:18-20; John 21:3; Romans 6: 1-11

“They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.”

You have been set free through Christ. Like Peter, Jesus has called you from your nets, from your former way of life. Think back to when Jesus met you and he became everything; when you entered into a relationship with the God of the universe and responded to the call of discipleship.

Jesus rescued you out hopelessness. Out of depression, anger, pride, lust, pornography, fear, anxiety, loneliness, and so much more. In exchange he gave you new life, purpose, joy, freedom. He gave you Himself.

Since we have been set free, why do we find ourselves going back to our former way of living? Peter, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, found himself retreating back to his former way of life: Fishing. But, Peter was no longer supposed to be a fisher of fish. He was supposed to be a fisher of men! No surprise, then, that he caught nothing that night.

In the same way, you will not find life when you go back to fear or old habits. You have been called to higher things. Do you believe it? Do you remember and realize all that God has done for you? Do you remember the calling God has on your life? He has an incredible plan for you!

Whoever this is for today, know that you have hope in the gospel. You do not need to continue to go back to your old nets. You have been set free in Christ! God is madly in love with you, and is running to embrace you. So today, drop your old nets, and embrace the freedom God has provided for you.

Prayer:
Lord, strengthen my resolve to leave my old life behind. I certainly have wasted enough time in things that I have no business doing as a child of God. Thank you for restoring my hope in you today.
