Day 34: Unfolding Today & Discovering God’s Will
Does God have a specific plan for my life? What should I do with my life? What job should I take? Who I should marry? We want to know God’s specific plan for the who, what, when, where, why and how of our lives. We often think of God’s will like a corn maze or a tight rope, a bull’s eye or choose-your-own adventure. We often fear we’ll make the wrong choice, declare the wrong major, choose the wrong job or spouse, and suddenly the choose-your-own adventure will hit a dead end. But, God is not our personal magic 8 ball that we shake up and peer into whenever we have to make a decision.
In his book Finding the Will of God: A Pagan Notion?, Bruce Waltke states:
We ought to stamp out of our vocabulary the misleading expression “finding God’s will.” Rather than talk about “seeking the will of God,” we ought to speak of following the guidance of God. This is not just semantically different, since He is calling us to draw close to Himself and to live holy lives. God’s will for us is that we be holy; there is no mystery to His will. As for those questions about changing jobs, getting married, going to school, and the like, finding answers will require growing close to God.
Rather than desperately searching for grand answers or light bulb moments, how can we learn to recognize God’s hand in the small details of each day? God’s plan for you is unfolding all around you.
Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Colossians 1:9 and Ephesians 5:17-18
Questions to consider:
What can we learn about God’s will and call upon our lives from the above passages? How can you continue to grow close to God?
Prayer:
Lord, I let go of my desire to know the future. I lean into you, confident that you hold my future. You are before all things, and in you, all things hold together.
