Day 37: Remember
I'm not sure if this is just me, but I feel like I am becoming more forgetful. I will be in my house working on something and then I will get a text and completely forget what I was doing. I will be writing an email at work, stop to talk to a colleague, and then completely forget what my email was about. Thank heavens for great apps like Wunderlist, iCal, and Reminders. My iPhone remembers everything for me.
Forgetting is not always a big deal. Forgetting a name, a birthday, a grocery list item, or where you parked may feel awkward for a moment, but life moves on. But what if forgetting was more costly? What if you forgot an anniversary? Would that affect a relationship? What if you forgot a near death experience that you had with someone? What if you forgot medicine you needed each day or an important medical treatment? Remembering can often be very important.
As Israel stood ready to walk into the Promised Land, God repeatedly called His people to remember. The book of Deuteronomy contains Moses’ finals words to God’s people before they go into the Promise Land. It is a speech or sermon encouraging Israel to love and be faithful to God, something that we want to do and be as God’s people today.
Read Deuteronomy 8
In this sermon, Moses uses the word "remember'' 15 times. He called them to remember the times that they were unfaithful. He called them to remember the times that they were disobedient. He called them to remember the times God had to discipline them. He also called them to remember the ways that God delivered them from slavery. He then called them to remember how God appeared to them. He called them to remember how God had been faithful to them. And He called them to remember how God would be faithful to them even when they would sin and fail Him.
Remembering is a huge deal when it comes to being a faithful follower of God. We often suffer from spiritual amnesia. We forget what God has done. We forget that the sin in us is our biggest problem. We forget that God is not surprised and we forget that God will be faithful. So we must remember.
Question to Consider:
What must I remember to love and be faithful to God today?
Prayer:
Lord, keep my mind focused on you today as I remember all that you have done for me. Let it not slip my mind how faithful you have been to me. Amen.
